Italian coasts confront marine litter: 3 tonnes cleared in Veneto, yacht crew fined in Amalfi

A citizen‑science beach cleanup organised by Plastic Free Onlus on 2‑3 May removed more than three tonnes of waste from the Venetian shoreline, from Bibione to the Po Delta. Volunteers recorded over 180 categories of litter, noting the predominance of plastic fragments and polystyrene that are breaking down into microplastics. The data were validated by ISPRA and forwarded to the European Environment Agency for the Marine Litter Watch project.

In a separate incident on the Amalfi Coast, municipal police fined the crew of a luxury yacht that dumped rubbish into public beach bins at Minori. Authorities warned that waste from vessels must be disposed of through authorised channels, not in public containers, and highlighted the broader costs of such incivility for local administrations.

Both events underscore ongoing challenges of marine litter along Italy’s coasts and the need for stricter enforcement and systematic monitoring.
