Italian coffee market sees shift to Kappy Royal blend in 2026
Competitive Data’s 2026 edition of the ‘Coffee in the Ho‑Re‑Ca channel’ report shows the Italian roasted‑coffee market grew 9.4% in value in 2025, reaching €808 million despite a volume decline. The surge was driven by higher average prices, while soaring green‑coffee costs—record highs linked to climate issues, low stocks and a weak euro‑dollar rate—kept raw‑material expenses above 60% of revenue. The sector faced a record 39 roaster closures in 2025, prompting efficiency cuts and tighter working capital.
Data from Lino’s Coffee, Italy’s large café chain, reveal a notable change in domestic pack sales. In 2025 the Granbar blend captured 97.5% of coffee sold in cafés. By the first five months of 2026, the exotic Kappy Royal blend became the top‑selling home‑use coffee with a 47.1% share, overtaking Granbar (37.7%) and O’Reyal (15.2%). Consumption patterns shift throughout the day, with Granbar dominating morning espresso and Kappy Royal gaining strength in the afternoon, reflecting evolving consumer preferences toward richer, robust profiles.
