Italian craft leaders call for legislative reform and SME credit support

Leaders of Italian craft associations are calling for urgent legislative and economic support for the country's artisan sector. Dario Costantini, President of CNA, emphasized the need for a reform of the framework law on craftsmanship, noting that current regulations date back to 1985 and must be updated to address modern challenges like artificial intelligence.

Costantini also highlighted critical economic hurdles, specifically a 43% decline in credit available to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) over the last decade and the disappearance of local bank branches. He warned that failure to implement these reforms could create a deep rift between the artisan sector and political institutions.

Marco Granelli, President of Confartigianato, described the sector as a vital expression of Italy's productive and cultural identity. He noted that the industry comprises approximately 1.3 million businesses and 2.6 million employees, generating an estimated 374 billion euros in turnover and 59 billion euros in exports. Granelli suggested that technologies such as robotics and automation could serve as allies to artisans by handling routine tasks, allowing workers to focus on creativity and personalization.
