Italian disability advocates urge Reggio Calabria mayor to improve transport services

Commentator Daniele Romano argues that the public debate on disability in Italy has become a spectacle and must be moved back to the proper institutional venues – budget tables, schools, universities, workplaces and trade‑union forums – to guarantee civil, political and economic rights, secure structural funding, implement universal design and real employment opportunities for people with disabilities.

The cooperative Libero Nocera addressed an open letter to the newly elected mayor of Reggio Calabria, Francesco Cannizzaro, urging him to make assisted transport a priority. The letter highlights insufficient home‑care hours and an inadequate voucher scheme, and proposes a phased expansion of transport services, possibly managed by the public mobility company ATAM or specialised third‑sector entities, to ensure access to care, rehabilitation and education while easing the daily burden on hundreds of families.
