Italian economic leaders call for EU reform and tax dialogue

Italian economic and political discussions have highlighted significant challenges facing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Former Minister Gianni Alemanno criticized European Union financial constraints, arguing they prevent public investment, tax reductions, and the promotion of industrial supply chains. He suggested that Italy must demand more flexibility from Brussels, even considering leaving the EU as a last resort.

Alemanno also addressed the war in Ukraine, advocating for a realistic peace settlement and the removal of sanctions against Russia. Domestically, he emphasized the need to protect businesses from bureaucracy and judicial interference. Data from the Conflavoro Study Center indicates a looming demographic crisis, predicting that Italy will have 7 million fewer people of working age by 2050, noting that four out of ten planned hires currently go unfilled.

In parallel, discussions regarding the fiscal system emphasize a shift from a “control-based” tax model to one based on dialogue. Deputy Economy and Finance Minister Maurizio Leo has promoted moving away from conflict between the administration and taxpayers toward preventive dialogue. This approach aims to reduce tax litigation through tools like the Tax Control Framework and simplified regulations, allowing businesses to plan with greater certainty.
