Former Italian Justice Undersecretary Andrea Delmastro's Conviction Upheld on Appeal

The Court of Appeal in Rome confirmed an eight‑month prison sentence for Andrea Delmastro, the former undersecretary for justice, finding him guilty of revealing official secrets in the case of anarchist Alfredo Cospito, who is being held under Italy’s 41‑bis regime. The judges rejected the prosecutor’s request for acquittal, which had argued that the disclosed material was not classified.

Delmastro, who resigned after the earlier “Bisteccheria” scandal, left the courtroom without comment and announced his intention to appeal to the Supreme Court. His lawyer, Andrea Milano, described the verdict as “disappointing” and said the defence would pursue further legal action. The case centers on a limited‑distribution prison report that Delmastro accessed and allegedly passed to a parliamentarian, suggesting a potential collaboration between mafia groups and Cospito against the 41‑bis system.
