Italian investigations into mafia links
Overview
In late May 2026 a Rome court upheld an eight‑month prison sentence for former justice under‑secretary Andrea Delmastro, confirming his conviction for leaking official documents in the high‑profile case of anarchist Alfredo Cospito. The following week Delmastro testified before the Antimafia commission about his brief involvement in the “Bisteccheria d’Italia” restaurant, a venture linked to the daughter of convicted mafioso Mauro Caroccia. He claimed ignorance of Caroccia’s criminal background and said the episode prompted his resignation.
In mid‑June the focus shifted to the investigation of Matteo Messina Denaro, Italy’s most wanted mafia boss. Carabinieri of the ROS conducted raids on the homes of Francesco Burrafato, an 85‑year‑old retired hospital director identified in seized mafia notes as “Parmigiano.” Prosecutors allege Burrafato facilitated a €40,000 loan for Denaro and provided other financial assistance.
Later that month authorities broadened the asset‑seizure effort, probing Swiss bank accounts and properties in Ticino for Denaro’s estimated €5 billion fortune. The same operation formally charged Burrafato with aiding Denaro’s criminal organization and violating probation, citing seized weapons, handwritten notes and a €200 million asset haul.
Together, these developments illustrate a concerted Italian crackdown on recent revelations of mafia connections to political figures, public officials and financial networks, extending from domestic judicial proceedings to cross‑border asset investigations.
