Italian government allocates €820,254 for Montecorona hermitage restoration and extends reconstruction deadline

The coordination cabinet chaired by Extraordinary Commissioner Guido Castelli approved €820,254 to fund the restoration of the Montecorona hermitage in Umbertide, a key cultural and religious site damaged in the March 9 2023 earthquake. The same decision also extended the private‑reconstruction deadline from June 30 to September 30 2026, giving owners more time to submit professional design contracts without delaying subsequent reconstruction phases.

A separate study presented by architect Marisa Massaro estimated that Italy has spent more than €136 billion on earthquake damage over the past 55 years, averaging a tax burden of over €2,300 per citizen. The Irpinia quake accounted for the highest cost at over €52 billion, followed by events in Friuli‑Venezia Giulia, Central Italy (2016), and others, highlighting long‑term fiscal and structural challenges in seismic risk management.
