Italian government backs Sicilian fisheries and marine heritage projects

A conference held at Palermo’s Teatro Santa Cecilia highlighted the REIMAR registry, which records and protects Sicily’s maritime culture. The event awarded REIMAR flags to several mayors and recognized the Museo Nocito del Corallo, whose director Mario Di Giovanna received the distinction. Funding announced for the museum will support the creation of five new exhibition rooms dedicated to coral legends and maritime history.

Separately, European Parliament member Denis Nesci met fishery operators in Villa San Giovanni, stressing the Meloni government’s concrete support for the sector. The meeting featured Sub‑Secretary Patrizio La Pietra and highlighted the role of Minister Francesco Lollobrigida in advancing policies that safeguard jobs, the economy and the identity of coastal communities.

Both events underscore the Italian authorities’ focus on strengthening the fishing industry while preserving the cultural heritage linked to the Mediterranean sea.
