Sicily expands investment while facing urban and climate aid
Overview
By early September 2026, Sicily continued to balance multi-sector investment with growing environmental and resource challenges. The region has prioritized vocational training and digital transition, reinstating one-year Higher Technical Education and Training (IFTS) courses for residents aged 18 to 25. Additionally, €15 million from the FSE+ 2021-2027 fund has been allocated to ITS Academy foundations to support high-level technical training. To address geographic isolation, the regional government allocated approximately €70,000 to support students from Lampedusa and Linosa through the Luigi Pirandello Institute.
Infrastructure and safety efforts have expanded significantly. In the province of Syracuse, the Libero Consorzio Comunale is executing a plan for road maintenance and requalification. In the Catania-Paternò area, an €800,000 project aims to secure a section of the SS 121 in Misterbianco, while construction has resumed at the Corleone tunnel on the SS 118.
New strategic investments have also targeted water security and agriculture. The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport allocated over €151 million via the SFNISSI national instrument to modernize water networks and combat drought. Major projects include a €98 million upgrade to the Risalaimi water treatment plant in Misilmeri and a €50 million investment for regional water infrastructure automation. Furthermore, in the agricultural sector, the administration authorized approximately €37 million in advance payments under the 2023/2027 Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) strategic plan. Regional Agriculture Councilor Luca Sammartino noted this allows the region to exceed 2026 spending targets early, providing farms with necessary liquidity.
