Castellammare di Stabia municipality dissolved over Camorra infiltration
On 15 July 2026 the Italian government ordered the dissolution of the municipal council of Castellammare di Stabia and the suspension of Mayor Luigi Vicinanza after a ministerial investigation confirmed infiltration of the local administration by the Camorra. Prefect of Naples Michele di Bari appointed three commissioners – former prefect Dario Caputo, vice‑prefect Mara Moscato and senior area director Maurizio Vallone – to manage the municipality for the next 18 months.
The decision, proposed by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, marks the second dissolution in five years due to organised‑crime influence. Vicinanza publicly rejected any direct pressure from the mafia, thanked supporters, and criticised the Democratic Party leadership, accusing figures such as Elly Schlein and Sandro Ruotolo of abandoning him. The move has intensified internal party tensions and highlighted ongoing challenges in combating criminal infiltration of local government in Italy.
