Italy extends paper ID card validity, stops overseas use

The Italian Council of Ministers has decided that existing paper identity cards will remain valid until their natural expiration date, removing the earlier deadline of 3 August 2026. The cards can still be used for domestic purposes and interactions with public administration, but they will no longer be accepted for travel abroad. Citizens planning to travel within the European Union or elsewhere must obtain a electronic identity card (CIE) or a valid passport. The extension aims to ease the workload of municipal offices and avoid a rush of renewals during the summer period. Municipalities, such as Terni, are increasing CIE issuance points to accelerate the transition. The new deadline for mandatory electronic cards is set for 31 January 2027, giving residents more time to switch.

The measure underscores Italy’s ongoing shift toward digital public services while maintaining a transitional period for traditional documentation.
