Italian government to hold meetings on ex Ilva steel complex

The Italian government has scheduled two meetings at Palazzo Chigi on September 8 to discuss the future of the ex Ilva steel complex. The first meeting will involve business representatives, including Confindustria and Confcommercio, at 4:00 PM. This will be followed by a 5:30 PM meeting with major metalworker unions, including Fim-Cisl, Fiom-Cgil, Uilm-Uil, Ugl Metalmeccanici, Usb, and Federmanager.

The discussions follow a government decree issued on August 26, which modifies the rules regarding financial guarantees for waste management and landfills within strategic steel plants undergoing sale procedures. Under the new decree, these guarantees can be provided on an annual basis during extraordinary administration and until the sale to third parties, rather than requiring multi-year commitments.

Legislative review is also set to begin on September 9, when the Senate Industry Commission will examine the new decree. The Senate will subsequently establish a schedule for hearings regarding the measure.
