Italian health authorities expand dialysis access for tourists and home patients

The health authority in Ancona province (AST Ancona) has launched a seasonal “Tourist Dialysis” program for patients staying in the region. The service operates at three hospitals—Principe di Piemonte in Senigallia (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday afternoons until 30 September), Carlo Urbani in Jesi (Monday, Wednesday, Friday afternoons from June to September) and Engles Profili in Fabriano (year‑round morning and afternoon shifts). Patients must provide medical documentation, recent lab results and insurance details to access treatment.

Separately, the ASL Salerno project for home‑based dialysis, coordinated by the nephrology unit at the Eboli hospital, won the Patient Engagement Award at the Helaglobe competition in Milan. The initiative brings dialysis into patients’ homes, especially targeting residents of remote or underserved areas, combining telemedicine with proximity care to improve quality of life and equity of access. Director General Gennaro Sosto highlighted the model as a key step toward making the home the primary place of care.
