Blood donation initiatives and medical research developments in Italy

Italy is facing several blood-related healthcare developments, including urgent calls for donors and new medical research initiatives.

In Rome, the Agostino Gemelli University Policlinic IRCCS has issued an urgent appeal for blood donors, specifically for groups O+ and O-. The shortage is exacerbated by the summer season, as donations typically decline during August while medical needs remain constant.

In Sicily, a regional multicenter study is underway involving 15 neonatal intensive care units to utilize umbilical cord blood for premature infants. The project is led by the ASP of Enna and utilizes the Cord Blood Bank in Sciacca as the central processing hub to improve the quality of life for preterm babies.

Other regional updates include an 18% increase in blood donations in Liguria following a period of concern regarding damaged supplies, and various local initiatives by AVIS to improve donor facilities and organize extraordinary collection events in Olbia and Atri.
