Italian health services launch new addiction support hubs
Health authorities in Italy are expanding access to addiction support services through new community-based hubs. In the Bergamo Ovest region, the Asst Bergamo Ovest has opened six experimental service points located in Dalmine, Zanica, Treviglio, Romano di Lombardia, Martinengo, and Ponte San Pietro.
These free services, part of the 2026-2027 Local Addiction Plan, are designed to provide information, listening, and orientation for youth, families, and adults. The initiative aims to reduce stigma by placing services in accessible locations like Community Houses. Support covers substance use, such as alcohol and tobacco, as well as behavioral addictions including gambling, internet, and smartphone overuse.
In Florence, the Spazi Giò project, promoted by the Azienda Usl Toscana centro in collaboration with the Progetto Villa Lorenzi Association, has established four locations within Community Houses. These hubs offer specialized operators to assist minors and adults with psychoactive substance use and behavioral issues like problematic gaming and online gambling. The service provides free access through walk-ins or appointments to help intercept issues early.
