Deloitte-backed San Bartolomeo project delivers specialist care to over 1,000 vulnerable patients in Italy
The San Bartolomeo initiative, launched in 2023 by Deloitte Central Mediterranean in partnership with the Ospedale Isola Tiberina – Gemelli Isola and the Comunità di Sant’Egidio, has provided specialist medical care to more than 1,000 socially and economically fragile patients from over 75 countries.
During a press conference at the hospital’s Aula Magna, CEO Fabio Pompei highlighted that the programme offered 3,660 specialist procedures, including dentistry, gynecology, oncology, ophthalmology and orthopaedics. Seventy percent of the beneficiaries were women; over 140 minors received dental treatment, 35 children were born, and 85 hospital admissions—more than 20 for cancer—were recorded. Follow‑up care continued for 34 % of patients.
Project leaders emphasized the collaborative model as a “best practice” that could be replicated elsewhere, and announced plans to expand the initiative while securing its structural sustainability.
The effort underscores how public, private and third‑sector cooperation can reduce barriers to health services for the most vulnerable.
