Italian health union Sumai Assoprof calls for incompatibility rule reform

The trade union Sumai Assoprof, represented by secretary‑general Antonio Magi, has backed a legislative amendment introduced by Forza Italia to overturn the current incompatibility regime that limits health‑care professionals from taking additional work. The union proposes that doctors and specialists may voluntarily perform extra activities outside official hours, both in public and accredited private facilities, to immediately increase the supply of specialist visits and examinations.

Sumai Assoprof argues the change is needed to make Italy’s National Health Service more attractive, reduce long waiting lists, de‑congest hospital emergency departments, and lower out‑of‑pocket expenses for patients. The union also calls for higher remuneration for professionals comparable to other EU countries and stresses that the reform should preserve transparency, avoid conflicts of interest, and protect existing professional rights while helping retain young doctors who might otherwise emigrate.
