Italian health unions demand staff and ambulance upgrades at Teramo and Vallo della Lucania hospitals

In the province of Teramo (Abruzzo), the Ugl Salute Abruzzo union has asked the regional health authority (ASL) for detailed explanations on the organization of the 118 emergency ambulance service. The union highlights persistent problems with night‑shift coverage, inadequate staffing of nurses, and unclear use of external personnel. It also requests information on plans to renew the ambulance fleet and cites the recent introduction of an auto‑medical unit at Giulianova hospital as a positive step, while stressing that overall staffing remains insufficient.

In Vallo della Lucania (Basilicata), the Nursind Salerno union warns of a critical shortage of doctors that threatens emergency trauma care and a wide range of departments, including obstetrics, anesthesia, surgery, neuro‑surgery and laboratory services. The union attributes the decline to a halted turnover since 2008, lack of attractive recruitment programmes and imminent retirements. Union leaders Biagio Tomasco and Adriano Cirillo have called for immediate hiring contracts tied to the region, new competitive incentives, and urgent staffing competitions for senior medical positions, stating that the hospital risks functional collapse if no action is taken.
