Italian Highway Authority Forecasts Peak August 2026 Traffic Congestion
Autostrade per l'Italia has released a traffic forecast for August 2026, identifying the most congested days for motorists. The busiest period is expected on the weekend of 7‑9 August, with the A1 Milan‑Napoli and A14 Bologna‑Taranto routes under the greatest pressure. Additional spikes are anticipated around the Ferragosto holiday, on the weekend of 22‑23 August, and during the final weekend of the month as travelers return from vacation.
To mitigate the impact, the operator will suspend construction work on the most affected corridors, deploy extra personnel and equipment at strategic points, and rely on its network of roughly 5 000 cameras, 900 traffic‑flow sensors and 400 weather stations to monitor conditions in real time. The plan aims to keep as many lanes open as possible through the peak travel weeks, with normal operations expected to resume by early September.
