Italian holiday plans shrink as cost of living rises

A recent Udicon survey of Italian consumers shows that while 68% still intend to take a vacation in the coming months, 31% say their trips are now shorter than before. The primary driver is the rising cost of living: 70% claim vacations cost more than in previous years, and 45% of those cutting days cite reduced family income as the reason.

Travelers are shifting to cheaper options: 39% list accommodation as the top expense, followed by transport (18%). To contain costs, 31% opt for lower‑price lodging, 27% choose nearer destinations, and 23% cut restaurant spending. Overall, two‑thirds (66%) say the higher cost of living directly shapes their holiday decisions, favoring domestic trips and reduced travel days.

A parallel study on experiential travel notes that over half of Italian respondents still value events such as concerts or festivals, but economic pressure remains the dominant factor reshaping vacation patterns across Italy.
