Italian tourism, mobility face fuel, power, tax pressures
Entities: natural gas · International Energy Agency · Italy · electric vehicles · Energy Square
Overview
June–July 2026 kept Italian summer tourism on an upward trajectory, with beach bookings and short‑break stays surging despite a persistent heat wave. Climate‑controlled accommodation continued to dominate, accounting for over 40 % of sales and adding roughly €146 to a three‑month energy bill. Wholesale electricity prices remained volatile, with the PUN hovering near €135/MWh in July and spiking to €165.9/MWh on 15 July amid tighter global gas supplies. The government’s mid‑July amendment to the “Decreto Bollette” removed direct CO₂ compensation for gas‑fired plants and introduced a temporary ceiling on the gas price used for electricity generation, modelled on the Iberian “Tope”. Mobility costs rose as diesel prices returned to €1.85‑€1.98 l, making Italy the most heavily taxed on‑road fuel market in Europe, and a Codacons warning highlighted strain on travel and goods prices.
On 21 July a new joint venture, Fleet Specialist, began operating in Italy after merging Notess and Auto No Problem. Targeting SMEs, professionals and sole‑proprietors, the firm will manage about 6,500 vehicles and promote a consultancy‑driven lease model that shifts businesses from ownership toward flexible, sustainable mobility, supported by a fleet‑management platform from tech firm My Mobility.
A week later, diesel prices in Sicily jumped above €2.30 per litre, with gasoline near €2.00 per litre, driven by rising international oil prices after heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Consumer groups warned of an extra €700 million in fuel‑related household expenses and urged government intervention to curb the tax burden, warning that soaring fuel costs could dampen the summer tourism peak.
