Italian hospitals confront staffing shortages and dialysis renovation delays

The labour union representing nursing staff has reported severe staffing shortcomings at the new operating block of the AORN "Sant’Anna e San Sebastiano" hospital in Caserta. Only 13 nurses are assigned to scheduled surgeries and 15 to emergencies, with no night‑time staff and insufficient operative support staff (OSS). The union also highlighted the lack of a patient‑identification procedure, which it says endangers patient safety and breaches the regional decree that mandates specific staff numbers for each surgical session.

In Ivrea, the Nursind union sent a letter to regional health assessor Federico Riboldi and ASL T4 director Luigi Vercellino requesting clarification on the financing and schedule for the renovation of the city’s dialysis unit. The facility has been temporarily moved to Castellamonte, and the union seeks transparent information to reassure patients and healthcare workers about the timeline and funding of the project.
