Italian hospitals implement new plasma donation methods and issue blood shortage appeals

Healthcare facilities in Italy are addressing blood and plasma supply needs through new procedures and urgent appeals for donors.

At the San Giovanni Evangelista Hospital in Tivoli (ASL Roma 5), a new method for apheresis donation of plasma and plasma-platelets will begin on September 7. This procedure, available by appointment for periodic whole blood donors, uses a cell separator to collect specific components while returning other blood elements to the donor. According to ASL Roma 5 Director General Silvia Cavalli, this method is highly efficient; a single apheresis donation can yield the equivalent of approximately six traditional whole blood donations.

Meanwhile, the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d’Aragona hospital in Salerno has issued an urgent call for blood donations due to critical shortages in the Campania region. Hematology specialist Bianca Serio noted that summer months typically see a decline in donations due to holidays, even as surgical and emergency needs remain constant. The hospital is urging residents and those returning from vacation to donate to replenish essential stocks.
