Italian humanitarian flotilla to Gaza sparks political concern and public solidarity events

Regional officials in Puglia, Italy, expressed growing alarm over the lack of information about activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza. Antonio Decaro and Silvia Miglietta urged the Italian government to use diplomatic channels to obtain verified details on the safety of participants such as Domenico Centrone and Dina Alberizia, warning that the silence must not be ignored.

An Italian boat from the flotilla reached Gaza despite a naval blockade, a development highlighted by Giovanni Barbera of Rifondazione Comunista, who called the arrival “a clear moral act of defiance against indifference” and reiterated calls for the end of the blockade, recognition of a Palestinian state and sanctions on Israel.

In the island of Procida, the Freedom Flotilla Italia docked for two days of public events, fundraising for the Al Awda hospital and raising awareness of the Gaza situation. Coordinators Shoukri Hroub, Maisa Hassan and local activist Vincenzo Fullone spoke alongside Michael Leonardi, who described the visit as turning the island into “a place of meeting between sea, testimony and civic commitment.”
