Italian industrial disputes: Eurallumina and Electrolux workers seek government intervention
Workers at the Eurallumina plant in Portovesme and the Electrolux factory in Porcia are seeking government intervention to secure their industrial futures.
At Eurallumina, four workers ended a protest atop a 60-meter furnace following a meeting at the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy (Mimit) in Rome. While union representatives expressed dissatisfaction with the meeting's outcome, the Ministry has formally committed to addressing the emergency phase of the plant's crisis. Three multinational companies have expressed interest in the site, and discussions regarding a negotiated sale or extraordinary administration are ongoing. The Sardinian Region is calling for the Ministry of Economy and Finance to provide concrete resources for plant safety and maintenance.
In Porcia, trade unions Fiom, Fim, and Uilm are coordinating with Electrolux workers to defend production capacity and employment levels. A series of ministerial meetings are scheduled for late October and early November. Workers are demanding the retention of the entire washer-dryer production line and insist that any management of redundancies must be voluntary, utilizing rotating redundancy funds and incentivized early retirement rather than forced layoffs.
