Italian Institute of Culture in New York to host Caravaggio and Republic exhibitions

The Italian Institute of Culture in New York will host two major exhibitions on October 14, inaugurated by Giorgio Mulè, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies.

The first exhibition, ‘1946: nasce la Repubblica. L’Assemblea Costituente a Montecitorio’, commemorates the 80th anniversary of the institutional referendum between monarchy and republic, as well as the election of the Constituent Assembly. Based on an exhibition in Rome, it features historical documents from the Chamber's archives, period photographs, and multimedia materials tracing Italy's path from the end of World War II to the approval of the Constitution on December 22, 1947.

The second exhibition marks the first time in the United States that Caravaggio’s ‘Maddalena in estasi’ (c. 1606–1610) will be displayed. Recognized in 2014 as an original autograph work, the painting depicts the saint in a moment of profound grief and repentance. The piece is believed to be one of the paintings Caravaggio carried during his final journey in July 1610.
