Italian cultural exhibitions in New York
Overview
The Italian Institute of Culture in New York has launched two major exhibitions to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Italian Republic and showcase significant historical art.
One exhibition, titled ‘1946: nasce la Repubblica. L’Assemblea Costituente a Montecitorio’, utilizes historical documents, photographs, and multimedia from the Chamber of Deputies' archives to trace Italy’s transition from the end of World War II to the approval of the Constitution in 1947.
The second exhibition features Caravaggio’s ‘Maddalena in estasi’ (c. 1606–1610), marking the first time this specific work is being displayed in the United States. Originally located in Berlin, the painting was scheduled for an exhibition in Guadalajara, Mexico, before being included in the New York program.
Officials, including Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies Giorgio Mulè and Consul General Giuseppe Pastorelli, attended the inauguration. The events are being presented as instruments of cultural diplomacy to highlight Italian identity through art and history.
