Ceuta migrant surge draws EU solidarity and prompts Italy's temporary border controls

More than 70,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in a few days, and at least 75 people died trying to cross the border, many by drowning. The crisis prompted an extraordinary video‑conference of EU interior ministers, who expressed "strong solidarity" with Spain and offered condolences for the victims.

Italian interior minister Matteo Piantedosi said Italy was extending "sincere solidarity" to Spain and clarified that the temporary reinstatement of internal air and maritime border checks was a precautionary, organisational measure, not a move against Spain. He also recalled that during the 2023 Lampedusa surge Italy received limited solidarity from EU partners and that NGOs were heavily involved in rescuing migrants at sea.

Italy is now urging the EU to apply "strong conditionality" to third countries that do not cooperate on returns, naming Morocco as a key example. The EU ministers discussed strengthening external borders and intensifying the fight against trafficking networks, but no binding decisions were taken; the next ministerial meeting is scheduled for October.
