Italian investigators advance ricin poisoning and Rimini assault cases
In Italy, judicial and criminal investigations are progressing in two distinct cases. In Rimini, a judge has dismissed the investigation into an incident involving Giuliano Saponi that occurred in May 2023. While it was initially suspected to be an assault potentially linked to the murder of Pierina Paganelli, Judge Raffaella Ceccarelli ruled that the event was a road accident caused by an unknown driver. The decision was based on technical-scientific evidence and a lack of concrete motive linking the incident to the homicide.
Separately, in Pietracatella, authorities are investigating the deaths of Antonella Di Ielsi and Sara Di Vita, who were poisoned with ricin. Investigators are analyzing seized digital devices, including a computer and ten flash drives from the office of accountant Gianni Di Vita, to examine personal relationships and habits. The Robert Koch Institute in Berlin is also analyzing 131 samples, having reportedly identified traces of ricin. Law enforcement in Campobasso continues to interview acquaintances and friends to reconstruct the events leading to the tragedy.
