Sigfrido Ranucci attack triggers lawsuits and parliamentary probe

A dynamite bomb exploded on 16 October 2025 in front of journalist Sigfrido Ranucci’s home in Pomezia, destroying his and his daughter’s cars but causing no injuries. Police have arrested four men from the Avellino province and are investigating entrepreneur Valter Lavitola as the alleged mastermind. Prosecutors are examining Lavitola’s repeated presence in the newsroom of the investigative TV programme Report and analysing his recent interviews for possible coded messages.

Ranucci, through his lawyer Roberto De Vita, filed a defamation‑and‑secret‑revelation complaint jointly with several Report journalists, accusing unnamed parties of leaking material covered by investigative secrecy. The case has sparked a broader political controversy: Minister of Enterprises Adolfo Urso wrote to the presidents of the Italian Senate and Chamber and to Rai CEO Giampaolo Rossi demanding greater transparency and the re‑establishment of the parliamentary Rai oversight commission. In response, Rai suspended the summer repeats of Report, a decision contested by the programme’s staff.

Media commentator Massimo Giletti has suggested that another known figure, referenced as “Corrado” in intercepted communications, may also be involved, adding further complexity to the investigation. Lavitola has appeared on television, pledging to remain silent until cleared by the prosecutor and promising to explain the case once authorised. Prosecutors have seized phones and pen drives from Lavitola’s residence during a July 4 search. The episode has also prompted a formal exposé by the Fratelli d’Italia party, intensifying the parliamentary debate over media independence and judicial scrutiny.
