Italy Ranucci bombing suspects face trial, political fallout
Overview
Following his arrest on 10 August 2026, Valter Lavitola has confessed to being the mastermind behind the 16 October 2025 dynamite attack on RAI journalist Sigfrido Ranucci. During a five-hour interrogation at Rebibbia prison, Lavitola claimed he orchestrated the incident to protect Ranucci, alleging the journalist faced dangerous threats. His defense attorney, Sergio Cola, stated Lavitola intended to force an increase in Ranucci’s security detail, which subsequently grew from two to eight agents. However, Lavitola has since reportedly claimed he only requested that shots be fired at the wall of the journalist's home rather than the use of an explosive device.
The Rome District Anti-Mafia Directorate is pursuing a different motive, suggesting the attack may have been a staged attempt to increase Ranucci’s notoriety and bolster his profile for a potential political career. Prosecutors are contesting the protective motive, noting the explosion may have been intended to intimidate the journalist regarding his investigations. Investigators are currently analyzing Lavitola’s electronic devices to resolve contradictions in his testimony, specifically regarding whether Ranucci had any awareness of the plot.
Lavitola faces charges including the use of explosives and mafia-style methods. The investigation continues to pursue Gomes Clesio Tavares, identified as Lavitola’s intermediary, who is currently a fugitive in Africa and subject to extradition proceedings. Despite the outstanding arrest warrant, Tavares has publicly stated his intention to return to Italy.
Four individuals—Antonio Passariello, Saverio Mutone, Pellegrino D’Avino, and Marica De Filippis—face charges including possession and use of an explosive device, threats, and damage. Political friction remains high; Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini has called for RAI to suspend its collaboration with Ranucci to protect the institution's credibility.
