Italian Labor Minister Calderone Announces Nationwide Agricultural Inspections After Amendolara Tragedy

Following the killing of four farm workers in Amendolara, Minister of Labour and Social Policies Marina Calderone held a summit in Reggio Calabria with regional officials, police and labour inspectors. She announced a special campaign of additional inspections in the agricultural sector that will begin in mid‑June and continue throughout the summer, stressing the need for close coordination among all authorities.

Calderone stressed that the increased checks must not criminalise honest farmers and highlighted existing legal tools, including article 18‑ter of decree‑law 145/2024, which grants residency permits and financial support to victims who report exploitation. Labour unions plan a protest in Amendolara, with CGIL and Democratic Party leaders expected to attend, while the criminal investigation into the murders of the Pakistani and Afghan workers proceeds.
