Italian lawmaker Luigi Marattin calls new electoral law a mistake

Luigi Marattin, secretary of the Liberal Democratic Party, told Quotidiano Nazionale on 18 July 2026 that the proposed electoral law is fundamentally flawed. He criticised the Bignami amendment, saying it forces a single list leader while mixing other candidates, creating a “glass of beer and wine” compromise, and voted against it. Marattin supported the Ziello amendment, arguing that preferential voting lets citizens select the political class, unlike party secretaries who prioritize loyalty.

He argued the law forces together parties with no common ground, perpetuating an unstable bipolar system where the right is split among Meloni, Salvini and Vannacci, and the left among Conte, Schlein and Landini. Marattin described the centre as fragmented, comprising small parties such as Azione, the Liberal Democratic Party itself, and new initiatives like Spazio Pubblico, and called for a unified centrist project with shared leadership. He affirmed he will not run for office, fearing ego‑driven damage to such a project.

Marattin also dismissed Matteo Renzi’s reformist house as a centre‑left formation aligned with Conte, Bonelli and Fratoianni, reinforcing his view that a new, cohesive centrist force is needed to replace the current bipolar instability.
