Italian leaders address global power politics and regional autonomy

Italian President Sergio Mattarella addressed the Ambrosetti Forum in Cernobbio, warning of a “concerning tendency to restore power politics,” involving the threat or use of force to resolve international disputes. He also characterized the European Union as the world’s most prominent example of shared sovereignty, noting that its successes often lead to it being “envied and opposed.”

Separately, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni marked the 80th anniversary of the De Gasperi-Gruber Agreement, which established autonomy for the Trentino-Alto Adige region. Meloni highlighted the agreement as a model for coexistence among Italian, German, and Ladin linguistic communities. She noted that recent reforms to the special statute have secured the competencies of the autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano, aiming to balance regional autonomy with national cohesion.
