Italian leaders address October 7 anniversary and Gaza crisis

On the third anniversary of the October 7 attacks, Italian leaders have issued statements addressing both the victims of the initial massacre and the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

President Sergio Mattarella condemned the acts of terrorism as being committed with “extreme and inhuman cruelty,” while also noting that Israeli operations in Gaza have caused “human and material devastation of intolerable gravity.” He advocated for a “Two Peoples, Two States” approach to end the violence.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized the need to fight antisemitism and stated that no cause justifies the deliberate massacre of innocents. She also expressed that Italy cannot remain indifferent to the “dramatic and unacceptable suffering” of Gaza's inhabitants and the increasing violence against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank.

Defense Minister Guido Crosetto maintained a firm condemnation of Hamas, stating that terrorism cannot be subject to relativism, but added that the suffering of one people should not make others indifferent to the suffering of another.
