Italian left party labels Meloni's electoral reform a constitutional coup

The national committee of Rifondazione Comunista met on 27‑28 June 2026 and approved a document condemning the new electoral law introduced by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The party describes the reform as “a true institutional coup” that creates a premierate without amending the Constitution, concentrates power in the governing right‑wing, and erodes the parliamentary system. It warns that the law would allow a president of the council elected directly by the people while also controlling a strong parliamentary majority, bypassing any referendum.

Rifondazione Comunista calls for a “constitutional, democratic, antifascist front” to defend the remaining democratic institutions and urges voters to oust the government in the 2027 elections.
