Italian man investigated for smuggling crocodile head through Turin airport

An Italian man is under investigation after authorities at Turin’s Sandro Pertini Airport discovered a dried crocodile head concealed in his luggage. The passenger was traveling from Miami via Istanbul when security and customs officials found the reptile part wrapped in paper during a baggage check.

The Guardia di Finanza reported that the individual is being probed for importing a specimen belonging to a protected species without the necessary certificates or licenses. The crocodile is a species protected under the Washington Convention, a global agreement established in 1973 to prevent the illegal trade of endangered plants and animals.

If convicted, the man faces significant legal consequences, including a fine ranging from 20,000 to 200,000 euros and a potential prison sentence of six months to one year. The seizure is part of a broader campaign by Italian authorities to combat the illegal wildlife trade, which often involves organized crime and the use of cross-border transit points.
