Italian Mayors Defend Against Local Controversies in Imperia and Vigarano Mainarda

In Imperia, city councilor Ivan Bracco of the Democratic Party accused Mayor Claudio Scajola of disrespecting the town’s Resistance heritage after the mayor welcomed a leader of the far‑right Futuro Nazionale. Bracco said the mayor “trampled the memory of the first citizen of Imperia,” urging him to stop politicising the historic medal.

In Vigarano Mainarda, Mayor Davide Bergamini rejected claims that a container near the municipal cemetery emitted foul smells. He explained that the box was empty, placed only as a precaution during exhumation work, and that sanitary checks found no problem. Bergamini criticised the spread of “false accusations” and called for responsible reporting.

Both officials framed the incidents as unfounded attacks on their administrations and emphasized transparency and respect for local history and public health.
