Italian Mayors Refute Media Claims of Budget Deficits

Mayor Alessio Serragli of Monticiano (Siena) said the press report of a €1.2 million budget hole is false. The Court of Auditors found a deficit of just over €200 000 for 2024 and noted that the municipality has already corrected the accounts for 2025, showing a surplus of more than €130 000.

In Modena, regional councilor Vincenzo Paldino accused Mayor Massimo Mezzetti of misleading citizens about waste‑service costs, citing a 7.93 % rise in tariffs after the reinstatement of bins and the reversal of a former bag‑collection system. Mezzetti and other local officials defended the changes, arguing that the previous administration’s policies left the city with extra expenses and that the current measures are necessary to maintain service standards.
