Italian medical innovators launch compact neutron generator and hybrid surgery suite
ENEA and Theranosti Centre are showcasing a Compact Neutron Generator (GNC) for intra‑operative neutron radiotherapy at the World Health Expo in Osaka, Japan (July 2‑4). The device, built with U.S. firm Berkion Technology, is compact (≈33 cm × 19 cm, a few kilograms) and can deliver a ten‑minute neutron dose to advanced solid tumours, potentially reducing the need for prolonged post‑surgical radiotherapy. The first prototype is being tested in ENEA’s Brasimone research bunker (TRL 4) before seeking full certification.
Meanwhile, the University Hospital of the Marche region inaugurated Italy’s first hybrid interventional operating room at its Torrette campus. The €7.7 million suite combines a sterile surgical block with real‑time radiological imaging, enabling minimally invasive procedures that can be instantly converted to open surgery. Operable 24 hours a day, the room is dedicated to the memory of Simona Giacchetti, former operating block coordinator, and is expected to improve surgical safety, reduce errors and shorten hospital stays.
