Italian medical researchers achieve global recognition in oncology

Italian medical institutions are achieving international recognition for advancements in oncology and radiotherapy.

Professor Stefano Arcangeli of the Fondazione IRCCS San Gerardo dei Tintori in Monza has been ranked first globally for scientific publications regarding hypofractionated radiotherapy for prostate cancer. According to a bibliometric analysis published in Discover Oncology, Arcangeli leads with 32 publications and 1,200 citations. This research focuses on hypofractionated techniques, which reduce the number of required treatment sessions while maintaining precision, thereby improving patient convenience and hospital efficiency.

Additionally, Giampaolo Montesi, director of oncological radiology at San Salvatore Hospital, participated in an international multidisciplinary consensus group. This group developed a scientific document intended to establish new clinical standards and guidelines for image-guided radiotherapy for upper gastrointestinal tumors, including pancreatic and hepatic treatments. The initiative involves collaboration between oncologists, radiotherapy technicians, and medical physicists to shape future clinical practices.
