Italian military and rescue services launch SATER 1-26 exercise

The Italian Air Force, in collaboration with the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps (CNSAS), has launched the SATER 1-26 search and rescue exercise in the Matese massif. Based at the Campochiaro airbase in the province of Campobasso, the drill focuses on testing aerial search and rescue procedures in difficult mountainous terrain.

The exercise involves seven helicopters from various branches, including the Air Force, Army Aviation, Navy, Carabinieri, Finance Guard, State Police, and Coast Guard. Participating ground teams include the Italian Red Cross and Civil Protection.

Simulated scenarios include searching for missing hikers and responding to military aircraft disappearances. The primary goal is to refine interoperability, response times, and coordination between different state agencies and emergency services during complex mountain rescue operations.
