Search and rescue exercises and operations in Europe
Overview
In late October 2026, the Italian military and rescue services initiated the SATER 1-26 exercise in the Matese massif. This drill, involving the Italian Air Force and the National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, utilized seven helicopters and various ground teams to test aerial search and rescue procedures in mountainous terrain.
By early November, search and rescue activities continued in the region. In Austria, a coordinated mission involving police, drones, and Red Cross search dogs successfully located a missing 51-year-old man. Simultaneously, emergency services in Italy conducted a joint training exercise near Aldein to simulate the search for a missing family, focusing on improving inter-provincial cooperation and information management among mountain rescue services and civil protection units.
