Italy's University Ministry opens 2026‑27 Medicine open‑semester registrations
The Italian Ministry of University and Research, led by Minister Anna Maria Bernini, has signed a decree for the 2026‑27 academic year that opens registrations for the “Semestre aperto” pathway to Medicine, Surgery, Dentistry and Veterinary programmes. Applications are accepted online via the Universitaly portal from 13 July until 3 August, with the contribution payable by 5 August (some sources note 6 August). Applicants must list at least ten preferred university sites and select a related course with a minimum of five sites.
Teaching begins on 1 September. The first exam session is scheduled for 10 December, with results published on 23 December; a second session follows on 11 January 2027, with results on 20 January. Each exam consists of 31 questions (10 completion, 21 multiple‑choice), lasts 50 minutes, and includes a 30‑minute break. Scoring awards one point per correct answer, deducts 0.1 for wrong answers, and gives zero for unanswered items. The national ranking is divided into three sections based on the number of passed exams, with the higher of the two attempts automatically counted if it exceeds 18/30.
A free preparation platform, semestreaperto‑medodovet.it, has been launched by the Conference of Italian University Rectors (CRUI) together with the ministry and CISIA to support candidates.
