European motorways face closures for maintenance and accidents

Several major European motorways are facing disruptions due to maintenance, infrastructure upgrades, and accidents.

In Switzerland, the Gotthard Road Tunnel on the A2 motorway will undergo nightly closures from August 24 to August 28, 2026, between 23:00 and 05:00. The Swiss Federal Roads Office (ASTRA) is conducting preventive maintenance on tunnel elements to reduce the risk of damage. Drivers are advised to use the Gotthard Pass as an alternative route.

In Croatia, the A3 motorway will experience temporary nighttime closures on August 27, 2026, to implement a new toll collection system. Specifically, the sections between the Novska junction and Okučani, as well as Okučani and Nova Gradiška, will be closed in both directions. Detours will be provided via various regional roads.

In Italy, an accident on the A14 motorway caused a temporary closure between the Cattolica and Rimini Sud exits toward Bologna, resulting in traffic queues of approximately three kilometers. Additionally, upcoming closures are scheduled for the A4 and the A52 ring road.
