Italian municipalities grapple with damage to newly renovated public facilities

The mayor of Galbiate, Piergiovanni Montanelli, explained that the Villa Vergano gym was temporarily closed after mechanical damage to its new floor was discovered. The municipality said the damage occurred during a summer camp run by the sports concessionaire Gruppo Duevi, which failed to follow the technical guidelines provided by the city. The concessionaire has acknowledged the problem and activated its insurance coverage while the municipality seeks repairs.

In Milan, the newly inaugurated Via Toce pedestrian area is already showing signs of rapid degradation. Regional and city councilors of Fratelli d’Italia, Chiara Valcepina and Francesco Rocca, reported vandalism, broken street furniture, dry trees and cracks in the new drainage paving just weeks after the June 12 opening. They criticised the city administration for prioritising an image‑focused launch over lasting quality and maintenance.

Both incidents highlight challenges faced by Italian local authorities in ensuring proper use and upkeep of recently renovated public spaces.
