In late July 2026, Italian towns faced scrutiny over the safety of public structures. Officials in Maddaloni announced a €5 million plan to repair severe roof deterioration at the historic Convitto Nazionale, while in Vigarano Mainarda opposition councillors warned that longstanding cracks and a tilting wall in the Palavigarano sports hall had been ignored despite warnings dating back to September 2025.

A few days later, similar criticism arose around newly renovated facilities. The Villa Vergano gym in Galbiate was closed after mechanical damage to its new floor occurred during a summer camp run by the sports concessionaire Gruppo Duevi, which admitted procedural lapses and invoked insurance. Meanwhile, Milan’s recently opened Via Toce pedestrian zone showed rapid degradation—vandalism, broken furniture, dry trees and cracks in drainage—prompting regional and city councilors to accuse authorities of prioritising a showcase launch over durable maintenance.
