Italian municipalities open extra offices for electronic ID cards

From 3 August 2026 Italy will no longer recognise paper identity cards, requiring all citizens to obtain the electronic identity card (CIE). To meet the deadline, municipalities such as Isola del Giglio are holding special opening hours – for example on 12 June 2026 the local registry office will be open from 09:00 to 12:00 for electronic‑card applications. Consumer association Federconsumatori Abruzzo has urged all towns in the region to run extraordinary service windows throughout June and July, with priority queues for seniors and vulnerable groups, to avoid citizens being left without valid identification for accessing pensions, banking and other essential services.

The national “If it isn’t electronic, it isn’t valid” campaign supports the transition, but local authorities are called upon to inform residents promptly and provide additional help for those with limited digital access.
