Italian municipalities rally to tackle persistent odor pollution in AERCA region
Councilor Angelo Di Lena of Pulsano criticised the local Democratic Party for only now addressing the odor, fire and foul‑smell problem that has affected the town, accusing the party of political opportunism and calling for stronger police checks to protect public health.
Mayor Pippo Gianni of Priolo Gargallo sent a letter to all communes in the AERCA (Area ad elevato rischio di crisi ambientale), convening a joint meeting on 31 July 2026 at the municipal palace. The summit aims to share data, coordinate monitoring and mitigation measures, and press higher authorities for concrete action. Gianni said, “Il perdurare dei miasmi continua a destare forte preoccupazione tra i cittadini…”, stressing the need for a coordinated response to protect residents’ health and quality of life.
